The present study investigated the occurrence of imitation and the change of expression in young children’s drawing. 30 children (10 3-year-olds, 10 4-year-olds, 10 5-year-olds) were asked to arrange 2cups after the arrangement had been shown to them (reconstruction task), to draw the cups as they had been shown to them (drawing task), and to draw the cups as they had been shown to them with the reference drawing (imitation task). The result showed that in the reconstruction task, 5-year-olds had more correct answers than 3- and 4-year-olds. There were no differences in results from other tasks or ages. These results suggests that children did not use imitation as a clue to visual realism.
