However, in music education, the aim has been to have groups of students listen to the same music and deepen their understanding of music. However, is this kind of “appreciation education” really cultivating “the ability to listen to music?” In this study, I started by surveying the first draft of the course of study to elementary school from 1947 to the ninth edition of the course of study, which was revised in 2017, clarifying how “appreciation education” in the subject of music has been handled so far. In the course of study, “appreciation” has consistently been included in the subject of music. Starting with the second edition in 1951, appreciation activities have focused on a range of musical elements.
