In Japan, SDGs has spread nationwide in the last seven years, but its extent differs among regions and local governments. The Japanese government formulated the SDGs Action Plan in 2016, and has been active in encouraging local governments to adopt SDGs along with local development. The SDGs Future City program is the government’s flagship program to facilitate local governments to adopt SDGs.\nBased on the overview of the significance and current situation of SDGs in the world and in Japan, and the application of SDGs in local developments in Japan, this article attempts to classify the decision-making processes of SDGs adoption based on the interviews conducted with local governments all over the country.
