Those Japanese civilians left behind were abandoned war orphans and women, known as zanryu- hojin. They lost several chances to repatriate over the years because of the post war politics between China and Japan. The normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and China in 1972 made it possible for Japanese nationals who were left behind in China to return home. However, due to the Japanese Government' late repatriation policies, zanryu- hojin were unable to for several decades This systematic delay in returning home has made the daily lives of returnees fraught with hardships.\nThey are now getting older, a condition that coincides the ‘cumulative disadvantages and advantages’. Therefore, this paper reviews the historical background of the late returning zanryu -hojin. Moreover, based on the life story of an aged Japanese repatriate whose transnational experiences and ageing were collected through participant observation and interview.
