Despite the departure of many residents and the disintegration of some communities, new connections emerged between those who remained and newcomers. The study seeks to clarify how community norms evolved after the disaster and what ‘home’ means to those who lived through it. Interviews were conducted with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including locals, U-turners, and I-turners. The KJ method was used to analyse the narratives, revealing that ‘hometown’ was often perceived as a pre-determined community, intertwined with both identity and a sense of inescapable fate. However, in the post-disaster context, the community shifted from traditional communal bonds to a more dynamic, symphonic view of ‘home,’ where individuals actively re-selected their homeland.
