| 内容記述 | 現在，ハワイで暮らす日本人は多様化し，さらに高齢化している．戦前からハワイへ移住した日系高齢者は２世から３世へと移行しており，日本語と日本的なケアをニーズとしている人たちは減少している．一方で，戦後日本からハワイへ移住した新一世たちの高齢化が進んでいる．彼らは直面する健康とケアの問題を異文化社会の中でどのように適応し，終の住処を選択しているのだろうか．本研究では，ハワイ在住の高齢新一世女性たちを対象にしたインタビュー・参与観察結果から４つの要因を明らかにした．第一に，言語の問題が終の住処を決める要因となる．医療や介護で使う言葉の問題に直面し，帰国を考え，あるいは，子どもらのサポートで言葉の問題を乗り越えようとしていた．第二に，日本とアメリカの医療と介護の費用が暮らす場所を決める要因となっていた．新一世たちは両国の医療・介護費用と質を比較し，終の住処をきめ，柔軟に適応しようとしていた．第三に，心情的・距離的に近接する家族や親戚の存在が終の住処を決める要因となっていた．近くにいる頼りになる子どもや日本の親戚との繋がりと距離が老いる場所の選択肢となっている．最後に日系コミュニティの持つ社会関係資本が老いの場所を選択する要因の一つとなる．特に本土からの定年移住者たちは，日系コミュニティが構築してきたサービスに着目してハワイに移住している．調査対象者である高齢新一世女性たちは，累積的な不利益による不安に対して，柔軟に対応する中で，最適な居場所の選択をしていることが明らかになった． | |||||

| 内容記述 | Today, Japanese American population in Hawaiʼiʼs is aging, and the aging of the Shin Issei Japanese, who immigrated to Hawaiʼi after World War II, is remarkable. This study focuses on how elderly Shin Issei women adapt to the health and care issues in Hawaiʼi, and how they choose their final home. In this study, I identified four factors based on the collected data of interview and participant observation of 28 elderly Shin Issei women. First, language issue is a factor in determining one's place of final residence. Faced with language problems in medical and nursing care, they considered whether returning to Japan or tried to overcome with support from their children. Second, the cost of medical and long-term care in Japan and the U.S. was a factor. They compared the cost and quality of medical and nursing care and tried to be flexible in deciding where they would live for. Third, the emotional and distance proximity of family and relatives was a factor. The connection and distance to reliable children and Japanese relatives were options for the place of aging in place. Finally, the social capital of the Nikkei “Japanese American” community in Hawaiiʼ is a factor in choosing. In particular, the Shin Issei from the mainland migrated to Hawaii with focus on the various services offered by the Nikkei community. This study reveals that the elderly Shin Issei women were trying to flexibly choose the optimal location from a variety of factors in response to the uncertainty caused by cumulative disadvantage. |
