| 内容記述 | 筆者の目的は，ユダヤ系ロシア系アメリカ人作家・思想家であるアイン・ランドの思想の特異性（可能性と危険）を明らかにすることにある．そのためには，アメリカの保守主義とアイン・ランドの関わりを整理・確認しておく必要がある．本論は，その作業の前半部分にあたる．アメリカ合衆国の政治理念は「自由主義」しかないということは，アメリカの政治思想研究の前提である．アメリカにおいて，いまだかつて，自由主義に真に対抗する意味での「保守党」なる政党が創立されたことはない．アメリカにおいて「保守主義」なる政治思想が意識され，政治運動として結実したのは，1930年代大不況期のニューディール（New Deal）政策の社会主義的，統制経済的政策がアメリカ国民にもたらしたアメリカ精神の変質（劣化？）と，冷戦期のソ連の台頭に対する危機感からであった．ソ連から亡命したアイン・ランドは，プロパガンダによる「希望の国」ソ連ではない実像のソ連を知っていたので，彼女の作品が，反ニューディール，反共的なものであったのは当然であり，アメリカの保守言論陣営は，彼女の作品が発するアメリカ的価値観や自由放任資本主義に対する祝福を大いに歓迎した．しかし，それも彼女の最大の作品『肩をすくめるアトラス』が出版されるまでのことだった．彼女の思想は，アメリカの保守主義が包括できない要素を含んでいた． Much of the world calls what Americans now call conservatism “liberalism or neoliberalism.” All major American political parties support the republican and liberal ideals on which the country was founded in 1776, with an emphasis on liberty, pursuit of happiness, rule of law, opposition to aristocracy, and equal rights. However the pro-collectivistic, pro-communist and big government-oriented policies that Democrat Franklin Delano Roosevelt brought to the country during the Great Depression provoked some American people with conservative mind to oppose the New Deal. The conservative movement of the 1950s attempted to bring together beyond their divergent views, stressing the need for unity to prevent the spread of communist mind and totalitarianism based on communism. Ayn Rand (1905-82) fled from her country contaminated with totalitarian oppression and social injustice, in pursuit of happiness and freedom in 1926. Her first major success as a writer came with The Fountainhead in 1943. This novel is striking, not only for its battle between the forces of conformity and the individualist, but also for its determined commitment to lassez-faire capitalism. While working in Hollywood, Rand extended her involvement with free-market and anti-communist activism. Besides she worked full time in a volunteer position for the 1940 Presidential campaign of Republican candidate. Thus Ayn Rand enjoyed an intellectually fruitful but temporary intimacy with emerging American conservatism. Rand and American conservatives were common in their political philosophy emphasizing individual rights (including property rights) and regarding laissez-faire capitalism as the only lesser evil social system. She worked with conservatives on political projects, but disagreed with them over issues such as religion and ethics, which was revealed by her publication of Atlas Shrugged in 1957. |
